Clinical Operations and Medical Safety

Dr. Smith was a founding member and Chief Medical Officer of his own CRO for twenty-five years, during which time he oversaw clinical operations and pharmacovigilance. He obtained his medical degree in South Africa. Then he completed further training in internal medicine and cardiovascular disorders at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Long Beach, California, and the University of California Irvine. He was a Professor of Medicine on the volunteer faculty of the University of California, Irvine, where he taught cardiovascular disorders, and a lecturer at Chapman University, Orange, California, where he taught medicinal chemistry.   

Dr. Smith's interest in cardiovascular research is evident in his active involvement in the field. His special interests include the renin angiotensin system, disorders of arterial compliance and endothelial dysfunction, 24- hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, and the general pharmacotherapy of cardiovascular disorders. He has served as the Chief Medical Officer on several large international multi-center clinical trials and has authored many journal articles, abstracts, and book chapters. His expertise has been recognized by the American Society of Hypertension, which designated him as Specialist in Clinical Hypertension. He currently holds active medical licenses in California and Montana.
